Advanced material sample for spacecraft photovoltaic systems

About Heliofold

Building lighter power systems for the orbital economy.

Heliofold brings materials engineering and flexible photovoltaic architectures together to address one of the defining constraints of space infrastructure: power.

Our future

A double-sided, flexible solar blanket.

Heliofold's long-term goal is a double-sided, transparent, flexible solar blanket: a single laminate designed to capture direct and reflected sunlight, roll for launch, and deploy at scale in orbit.

The vision is to combine power generation, structure, and shielding in one mechanically compliant architecture. That solar blanket is the north star guiding Heliofold's work across HJT cells, transparent protective films, and integrated material stacks.

Our path

From materials to orbital infrastructure.

A foundation in materials

Frederick Thompson's integrated engineering studies at Cardiff University brought together the physics of solar energy and the science of materials. Work in the clothing industry later deepened his interest in lightweight, flexible material systems.

Power becomes the constraint

As AI-driven computing expanded, space-based compute platforms emerged as a new frontier. In orbit, the limiting resource is not only compute capacity—it is the power available to sustain it.

Heliofold is founded

Frederick founded Heliofold in late 2025 to bring emerging solar materials into space-grade architectures for the next generation of orbital infrastructure.

Based in El Segundo

Today, Heliofold is based in El Segundo, California, at the center of Southern California's New Space ecosystem.
